This year will mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, and to commemorate this bicentenary, NCSU Libraries, NC State LIVE, and University Theatre have joined forces for a series of Austen-centric events from interactive video art to book discussions, film screenings to performances. Pride & Prejudice Open Rehearsal

Take a step into the artistic process as NC State students and staff create the inner lives of the infamous Bennet family. The rehearsal begins with a physical and vocal warm-up, followed by working various scenes from the production. A tour of the set and backstage areas and a Q&A with the cast is part of your experience.

As part of the Austen 200 at NC State commemoration of the 2017 Jane Austen bicentenary, we invite you to read Northanger Abbey, and join us for a book discussion moderated by Dr. Sharon Setzer, professor of English at NC State. Northanger Abbey was the first of Austen's novels to be completed for publication, in 1803, but published after her death, at the end of 1817. A satire of the popular Gothic novels of the time, Northanger Abbey is a spirited comedy of manners.
University Scholars Forum: Conversation with Desiree Sanchez, Artistic Director, Aquila Theatre

Aquila Theatre, under the executive artistic direction of Desiree Sanchez, is one of the foremost producers of touring classical theatre in the United States, creating bold reinterpretations of classical plays and literature. The New Yorker hails Aquila's productions as "beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect, " while The New York Times calls the company, "an extraordinarily inventive and disciplined outfit." On October 3 at 8pm NC State LIVE will present Aquila Theatre's newly-staged adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility. In advance of the performance, Desiree Sanchez will offer two lectures for the Scholars Forum. In these talks, Ms. Sanchez will explore the importance of Jane Austen and why her writing is still relevant 200 years after her death. And as the production's director, she will speak to the joys and challenges of staging Austen for contemporary audiences.
