Protect the Pack: You are Security

You are Security Cybersecurity Awareness Month October 2020

Your data’s privacy depends on your ability to secure it safely.

Your ability to secure your data depends on what you know.

During Cybersecurity Awareness Month (CSAM) in October, the Office of Information Technology (OIT), along with the NC State Department of Computer Science, ePartners Program, LabCorp, and MetLife, will co-sponsor “Protect the Pack: You are Securityto provide you with valuable yet simple advice you will need to protect your personal and work-related data and devices.

This year’s event will highlight a four-member panel of Google Security experts on Wednesday, Oct. 21 who will answer questions about the type of content that should be stored in Google Drive and the level of security the university’s G Suite environment provides. This panel discussion will be held at 2 p.m. online and is open to the novice and the experienced NC State G Suite user. To register, visit REPORTER. Event participants will have an opportunity to win great prizes, including a Fire TV 4K Essentials Bundle, a RT ROCKTEK G1 Android TV 9.0, a Jabra Speak 410 portable conference speaker, and Yubikeys.

October 2020 marks the 17th annual CSAM sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance to increase the awareness and prevention of online security problems.

“You are Security” also will feature the following cybersecurity initiatives and resources to help you gain the confidence to secure your data and devices:

You are Security Events

Data Security Training
How secure are you? OIT will launch the online Data Security Training module in October. Mandatory and available only for university employees, including student employees, retirees and nopays, the security training module focuses on cybersecurity awareness topics critical to the university, including phishing, two-factor authentication (2FA) and mobile device security. This module is one of many IT resources that can help reduce human error — the leading cause of compromised systems.
Information Security & Privacy Acknowledgement (ISPA) Form
Acknowledge your commitment to protect the Pack! Starting October 2020, employees will acknowledge annually the new ISPA Form via the MyPack Portal. This ISPA Form informs employees that they are required to abide by all university policies, regulations and rules (PRRs) and acknowledge their responsibility to prevent loss or unauthorized disclosure of university data.
Mandatory Student 2FA Enrollment
To run with the Pack, you need to enroll in 2FA; it’s a matter of security. This fall, NC State began a phased enrollment of current students into both of its 2FA solutions: Google 2-Step Verification and Duo Security. Students are encouraged to enroll now! Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to use 2FA wherever possible to reduce their risk of having their personal accounts compromised too. To learn more about who supports two-factor authentication, visit Two Factor Auth (2FA).
Mobile Device at NC State
Cybersecurity efforts and initiatives extend beyond the university, directly to the palm of your hand. This website offers tips and videos to show you how to secure your Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices, data and wireless connections. When you protect your mobile devices, you safeguard your data and protect others in the WolfPack community.
Endpoint Protection Standard
Secure your endpoints! All university students, faculty and staff must follow the security precautions outlined in the Endpoint Protection Standard (EPS) to protect varying levels of sensitive data. Endpoints include but are not limited to desktops, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. In teleworking scenarios, the EPS also outlines control requirements to access and store university data for both:

Stay Safe Online: A Cybergame
