Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers started a new training class this September which meets weekly, through February of 2019. It’s a full class of 36 students who are committed to learning all about horticulture so they can teach others how to be better gardeners and stewards of the land. Once they complete the training course, they will volunteer a minimum of 40 hours per year and participate in 10 hours or more of annual continuing education.

The 170 member Master Gardener℠ volunteer program is vital to horticulture outreach in Wake County, where they leverage the efforts of the Extension agent by responding to phone calls, staffing educational booths, maintaining four water-wise demonstration gardens, mentoring school and community gardens, and performing many other information-based services. In 2017, they made over 13,000 contacts and donated almost $280,000 worth in volunteer hours!

The next Master Gardener℠ volunteer training will begin in September of 2020 – applications will be due April 15, 2020. 2020 Master Gardener application  Meanwhile, the brand new Extension Gardener Handbook is available for purchase or online for free.
