Sue passed away on December 18, 2018. She started with N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center 19 years ago, where she touched many lives. She loved to teach, and she loved 4-H. She worked as an Out for Lunch Program Assistant for 5 years, teaching nutrition and cooking skills. In 2004 she became the 4-H Program Assistant, and was primarily in charge of 4-H classes, including sewing and cooking. She recruited dozens of sewing teachers to share their skills with children. She organized elaborate 4-H Fashion Revues where sewing students modeled their creations. She helped with the 4-H Pumpkin Patch Kids Program at Bullington Gardens, teaching young children how to plant and care for giant pumpkins. She also helped with the young people who volunteered with the dairy goats at the Carl Sandburg Home, “Flat Rock’s Exceptional Sandburg Helpers.” She developed a 4-H Ag Adventures Day Camp, in which campers visited farms throughout Henderson County, picked produce, and prepared food with the produce.

Sue was active in the NC Association of Extension Program Assistants, Associates, and Technicians, where she developed friendships with her co-workers throughout Western NC. She was also part of “Volunteer Hendersonville,” a local group that encouraged and celebrated volunteers from many different agencies. Sue was an outstanding writer and wrote many excellent newspaper articles for the Hendersonville-Times News.

Sue was loved by 4-H families, volunteers, and staff. Thanks to everyone for the overwhelming support and love for Sue, her family, and our staff. People use these words to describe Sue: caring, loving, a gentle spirit, a happy smile, a ready laugh, lived a life of faith, lovely, kind, and compassionate.

I think she liked when she could teach us some of the things about sewing. I will miss her very much.” – Keira McKibben, 10 yrs. old

Sue Janowiak will never be forgotten for her 14 incredible years of service working with 4-H and her lifetime of helping others. In honor of her life, 4-H wanted to pass on her legacy by recognizing a current 4-H’er who shares the same characteristics as Sue. This means a 4-H’er who is kind-hearted, giving, active in community service, enjoys sewing, arts, and crafts, and has a love for nutrition. The 4-H County Council, representatives from 4-H clubs, will accept nominations for this award, and select the award recipient each year. The award will be presented at 4-H Achievement Night in February.
