Collapse ▲The Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Lenoir County are busy growing a wide variety of plants to sell to benefit the community and the Kinston Lenoir County Children’s Garden. This year, the group’s plant sales will be on Friday, April 19, 2019, from noon to 4 p.m., and on Saturday, April 20, 2019, from 8 a.m. to noon. Both sales will be at the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Lenior County greenhouse which is behind the building at 1791 Hwy 11/55 in Kinson.
Plants currently being grown for the sale include many varieties of tomatoes and peppers, okra, squash, eggplant, rhubarb and many new varieties of herbs. Numerous flowers will also be for sale. They include butterfly weed, salvia, blanket flower, coneflower, rudbeckia, balsam, 4-o’clocks, nasturtium, begonia, cockscomb, yarrow, penstemon, spiderwort, bee balm, coreopsis, cosmos, Joe-pye weed, verbena, zinnia, marigold, sunflower, bachelor button, sweet wormwood, confederate rose, asters, coleus and moonflower. Come by to check out additional plants.
Plants are important in the ecology of the earth and in human history. Plants are a vital part of healthy eating. Just think of the limited food options we would have without plants. They also play a critical role in the connection of humans with nature.
Plant-based education in the United States goes back more than 100 years. Research shows that plant-based education produces positive growth for children in self-esteem, attitudes toward school and the environment, social development, physical and psychological health, creative thinking and problem solving, and effective learning of science and other academic subjects.
Gardening with children benefits the whole child because it offers active and engaging connections to the natural world. Gardening captures the interest of young minds by teaching nurturing skills, giving them a sense of pride in their accomplishments, introducing them to healthy foods, and providing an opportunity for them to improve and give back to the community. Indications are that children who spend time outdoors in natural, green spaces have reduced symptoms of attention-deficit disorder and ADHD.
