Pardon our Progress

If you’ve been by the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Henderson County office lately, you may have noticed some changes occurring. In fact, it may have looked like a mess at times. But, please pardon our progress as we make some needed changes to our lobby area and move some offices. The work is nearing completion and thanks to good folks at Henderson County Central Services for doing such great work. Once everything is complete, we will have a new counter when you walk in the door and a new seating area for guests to wait or for small meetings to take place.

We’ve added storage space under the new counters, moved several filing cabinets out of the main lobby and hopefully created a more inviting, professional, and work-friendly environment to make your experience at Cooperative Extension more enjoyable. We hope you’ll come by and see the changes we’ve made.

In addition to the construction, we’ve moved a few offices around to accommodate a new staff member that will be joining us soon and to also make the Master Gardener℠ volunteers office more accessible. You’ll find the Master Gardener volunteers office just to the right when you come in the front door. Now, folks won’t have to walk all the way through the lobby to see a Master Gardener volunteer – they’ll be right inside the door. The volunteers like their new office as they say it is brighter and gives a better view of the beautiful landscaping around our building – also courtesy of the Master Gardener volunteers.

Harvest Season is Upon Us

It doesn’t seem like it should be picking time just yet. Winter was just over a few weeks ago. That’s how it seems anyhow. Several crops in the county have already been in harvest mode for a few weeks and the remainder will be cranking up soon. Apple season is just around the corner and soon the roadside stands will all be open, and Chimney Rock Road will become quite busy. The apple crop this year has gone through some struggles but at least not the 100 inches of rain we got last year. Nevertheless, each year brings its own challenges and once again Henderson County growers have risen to meet those obstacles to produce a crop.

This year’s crop may not be the heaviest crop we’ve had, but so far, the quality is looking a little better than recent years. So, expect to find your favorite apples from Henderson County available in the coming weeks. We still need a few more weeks of favorable conditions to get the crop through the season, but for right now, we’ll take it. Support the local ag economy by buying locally grown and knowing you’re getting top-quality produce, healthy Henderson County goods.

Join our Corps of Volunteers

It might surprise you to know that our volunteers put in over 26,000 hours each year with Cooperative Extension and Bullington Gardens. In fact, volunteers are the backbone of many of our programs. Of course, many of these hours are donated by Master Gardener volunteers who contribute well over half of these hours. You can qualify to be a Master Gardener volunteer by taking our Master Gardner volunteer course offered each spring. If you drive by our office, you will notice the beautiful landscaping – which is really looking great this time of year. All of that is courtesy of the volunteers that put in the time to make that happen. We are always in need of volunteers in our office. Our 4-H program is always looking for new volunteers to work with the youth enrolled in 4-H. These volunteers do have to complete a background check since they are working with children, however, that process only takes a couple of weeks. The reward that you can get out of working with children, community gardens, Bullington Gardens and any of our other programs cannot be duplicated. Please consider becoming a volunteer in one of our Extension programs. You will meet new friends, learn new skills, accomplish many things that make a difference in our community and you will just have fun. Call our office at 697-4891 to learn about volunteer opportunities at N.C. Cooperative Extension of Henderson County. It could be a call that will change your life.
