On August 24th 4-H Shooting Sports teams from across Eastern NC gathered at the Eastern 4-H Center to test their skills, make new friends, and probably eat some BBQ. Months of work go into preparing for the regional tournament, and the cumulation of all those months of hard work starts before the sun is even up. The Pamlico County 4-H Shooting Sports team has both junior and senior members competing in multiple disciplines; compound Archery, Shotgun, Rifle T-class and O-class.

4-Hers Say the 4-H Pledge Before the Ceremony

This Thursday (September 12th) we got to celebrate their achievements. Ms. Pat Prescott along with Coach Shawn Carawan joined us in awarding the youth their medals. Dylan Potter won Overall Gold in Sr. Shotgun. Conner Daniels won Overall Gold in Jr. Shotgun. Brody Spain won Overall Silver in Jr. Compound Archery. The Pamlico Pintails: Dylan Potter, Brittan Mathews, and Drew Baker, won silver in Sr. team shotgun. The Pamlico Puddle Ducks: Brody Spain, Conner Daniels, Johnson Schaffer, and Dylan Lockwood, won Gold in Jr. Team Shotgun. The Pamlico Puddle Ducks: Brody Spain Conner Daniels, and Dylan Lockwood won gold in Jr. Archery Compound. We are all so proud of what they accomplished at the regional tournament and are very excited to watch them make their Best Better at the North Carolina State Tournament on September 21st.

While we are very proud of their dedication and hard work, we are even prouder that they turned their celebration into an opportunity to help others. They gathered supplies: portable phone chargers, fans, plastic totes, repair supplies, and more for those affected by Hurricane Dorian on Ocracoke Island. Together they are not only building leadership and sportsmanship skills but also compassion, empathy, and altruism.

All of their accomplishments and skills building can’t happen without a network of support. A great deal goes into ensuring that there is a place for the team to practice, the range is mown, there are clay pigeons to shoot, skeet throwers are in good working order, carpools are organized, photographs are taken, and children are coached. The Pamlico County 4-H Shooting Sports Team would not exist, or achieve so much without the effort and determination of Coach Shawn Carawan and parents: Kim and Derrick Potter, Holly and Bryan Potter, Tommy Spain, Earl Lockwood, Matt Schaefer, and Randy Daniels. It really takes a dedicated team of great volunteers to help the next generation of leaders grow.

Don’t forget about our exciting Fall Fun Program. Book Explorer’s is back! We had so much fun this summer that we decided to keep it going through the fall. We read a story from another culture, create folk art, and try food from that country. Our first meeting will be September 25th. Every school year we have a Fall Fun STEM club. This year’s will be Robot’s and Programing with Dash and Cue. We have two tracks for this program, for both older and younger children. Be sure to register before spaces fill up. We are also excited to get our brains working with Debate Club.
