Stanly County agriculture is vital to our economy, community, and environment.

Without agriculture in Stanly County, the local economy would take an immediate $90.3 million dollar hit. As the number one industry, agriculture does more than just feed people. It is an economic driver because of the supportive services, locally-purchased inputs, and locally-invested money. The industry provides careers in many areas other than farmers, also. These careers include: insurance, financing, equipment dealers/repair, scientist, educators, conservationist, marketing/sales, seed and chemical distribution, and food preparation to name a few. Research reveals that agricultural production provides the greatest return on government investment and support. However, the impacts go beyond the dollar.

The rural feel and sense of community in Stanly County is much due to the agriculture of the county. Farming provides for maintained land and open space. This allows for a nice balance between neighborly culture and the privacy and serenity of living in this beautiful landscape. Agriculture has had a long tradition of supporting fellow producers, cooperatively marketing, faith-based communities, and a genuine care for the quality of life. Of the farms in Stanly County, the vast majority are considered small farms. These farms share resources, sell together, meet regularly, support local entrepreneurs, and raise their families together.

Farmers are known for being stewards of the land. Unlike many businesses, the environmental impacts of the farm directly effect the future production and profits. In Stanly County, 80% of the cropland utilize a no-till production system as prescribed by the USDA and Soil & Water Districts of N.C. to conserve water, reduce soil compaction, and improve soil health. Precision agriculture and technology have greatly reduced the use of pesticides and fertilizer use to improve water quality and improve the efficiencies of the industry.

Stanly County has so much to offer because of its beautiful land and water, proximity to everything, and ideal small-town culture. Agriculture is a critical factor to maintaining this way-of-life that so many enjoy and others desire to have.
