Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a medical term used to identify any disorder that persistently obstructs bronchial airflow. Some of the disorders that fall under the umbrella of COPD are emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and refractory(non-reversible) Asthma.
National COPD month is an opportunity to learn more about the causes and prevention. One of the biggest causes of COPD is smoking. There are other factors that may lead to COPD, however, a lifestyle that includes smoking plays a large role in the development of the disease. Other factors could include exposure to dust, chemicals, and other environmental elements.
Throughout the month of November, there will be opportunities to learn more about COPD and to test your risk factors. You can also learn how to support a friend or family member that has been diagnosed with COPD.
