image of the 4-H organizational logoFranklin County 4-H’ers have been very busy gearing up for different events and competitions. Our most recent events and competitions include N.C. State Fair and the Four County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale.

One of our recent events that occurred in October was the N.C. State Fair. We had an estimated 30 4-H’ers competing in various areas at the State Fair, mostly in the Livestock division and 4-H Arts and Crafts. Franklin County was well represented with youth showing cows, chickens, turkeys, and sheep. The positive sportsmanship that these youth show not only in the ring but doing daily tasks is very admirable. Youth who show livestock are not only gaining knowledge about animals and how to care for them, they are gaining life skills such as problem-solving, building communication skills, working as a team, and many more. Some youth participated in the arts and crafts division at the fair. Franklin County won 1st place in the 4-H County Sweepstakes for having the most entries throughout NC in the 4-H entries. Way to go 4-H’ers.

Another event that took place on Saturday, October 26 was our annual Four County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale. We had 30 4-H’ers from Franklin County participate in the show and sale. We had a total of 53 youth from all four counties participate. Youth received their pullets in May and raised them until the show. Youth competed in showmanship and in the chicken breed classes. After the youth showed their chickens, there was a live auction and all the chickens were sold. The proceeds go to the 4-H’ers and the Four County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale to purchase pullets for the 2020 poultry project.

We are very proud of our 4-H’ers and their successes. The color of the ribbon is not the important part of competing in events; it’s the experience you reap from being involved in 4-H. I would also like to thank all of our dedicated club leaders, volunteers, and parents who work with these youth to ensure that they have a positive experience.

We are continuing to grow and would like to add you to our Franklin County 4-H Family. If you are interested in joining 4-H or becoming a volunteer, please contact Meg Wyatt at meg_wyatt@ncsu.edu or 919-496-3344.
