Collapse ▲The late Emmett Wayne Beard Sr. was inducted into the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame on November 22, 2019, during the annual Farm City Week program held by the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County and the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville. Beard passed away in 2017 at the age of 70.
An official portrait of Beard was unveiled and will hang on the wall with those of past inductees in the I.B. Julian Auditorium of the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County office at the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center, located at 301 E. Mountain Dr.
Wayne Beard was a farmer, teacher, and civic leader. He served as the agricultural representative on the Cumberland County Civic Center Commission, as an officer of the Cumberland County Livestock Association and on the Cumberland County Farm Advisory Board.
A 1968 graduate of Methodist University, Beard taught vocational courses, including agriculture education, in the Cumberland County Public School System for 30 years. He taught at Armstrong Junior High School and Mac Williams Middle School.
“Mr. Beard will be remembered for his dedication to his faith, his family and his farm. He was always willing to serve on agricultural boards, provide farm tours for youth, and he was a longtime member of the Cumberland County Livestock Association. Teaching young people about agriculture was truly his passion and he will forever be missed in our community,” said N.C. Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County Director Lisa Childers.
The son of William Carroll Beard Sr. and Margaret Taylor Beard, he grew up working on his family’s farm in the Eastover community, where they grew tobacco, corn, soybeans, small grains and raised cattle. Beard was active in the FFA and showed livestock in 4-H. He took over the farm at the age of 18 when his father died. He was awarded the North Carolina State Farmers Degree in 1964.
After he retired from the school system, Beard turned his attention to the farm where he increased his cattle herd and grew hay to feed the horses of the Fayetteville Police Department’s Mounted Patrol.
Beard’s wife Wanda Dawson Beard, son Emmett Wayne Beard Jr., daughter Jenae Beard Notto and his granddaughter Reagan accepted the honor.
“I am grateful for having a Godly father and a great mentor and for being able to grow up on a family farm,” said Wayne Beard Jr., who thanked the Kiwanis Club, Cooperative Extension, and Farm Bureau for their part in the Hall of Fame induction.
