I am excited about our upcoming Extension Horticulture programs that we have coming up in 2020. The first quarter of the year is a busy time. Each year I help plan and the AG Center hosts the Carolina Green Industry Network professional association in January for their annual Seminar & Tradeshow that attracts over 500 professionals. Continuing education credits are received for pesticide applicators, landscape contractors, and certified arborists at this program.

If you are interested in learning more about or joining the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Union County,  I will be holding a series of Informational Sessions on January 22 & 23 in Waxhaw, Indian Trail, and at the Union County office.

For those who want to learn more about home gardening or who are interested in becoming a Master Gardener℠ volunteer, the  Extension Gardener spring series of classes begins on February 11. If you are interested in joining the Extension Master Gardener program of Union County,  these are required classes. These classes are offered 6–8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings and repeated on Wednesday mornings and are held at the N.C Cooperative Extension on Union County office. The Extension Gardener series of seven classes are fee-based and pre-registration and payment is required.

This year our Extension staff has planned a series of Lunch & Learns that will held on the first Wednesday of each month at the AG Center, noon–1 p.m. Bring your lunch and join us for a discussion of various topics from our Extension staff each month on the first Wednesday at noon. February 5, will be the kick-off for this series and the topic will be Pruning 101. There will be a follow-up with a hands-on workshop at the Ag Center on Saturday, February 8, 9 a.m.-Noon, that will include pruning of ornamentals and fruits. Their programs are free, but pre-registration is required. For the pruning workshop, come dressed for the weather and bring your pruning tools.

Bill Cline, our state Extension Blueberry Specialist will lead a Blueberry Production Workshop on February 7, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The Workshop will begin with a morning session on growing blueberries. The afternoon session will be hands-on learning in the field on how to properly prune blueberries. Come dressed for the weather and bring your pruning tools. The program is free, but pre-registration is required.

If you have questions, would like more information, or would like to register for any of these programs, call 704-283-3801 or visit our website.
