4H teen leader teaching younger childrenMentoring is a great opportunity to reach youth and adults as well to help lead, support, and engage others to make the best better. It’s an exchange of experiences and knowledge. January is recognized as National Mentoring Month. Through 4-H, there are different ways that the program creates a mentoring type partnership either through peer mentoring, adult-child mentoring, or reverse mentoring.

4-H mentors are more than advisors. They are role models, educators, and friends to 4-H youth in their communities. Every 4-H project and program involves youth collaborating with caring adult mentors where kids are encouraged to explore their interests and receive constructive, positive support.

In a more informal setting, Union County 4-H’s Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program serves as a mentorship program for teenagers to participate in during the summer. As a CIT, the youth will gain leadership, citizenship, and communication skills through a service-learning opportunity that is defined by the following criteria: community service and intensive training on leadership, behavior and conflict management, ages and stages of children, team building, and program planning.

As a total, the thirteen volunteers served a total of 1,294 hours during the summer impacting more than 100 camper. Union County 4-H saved $32,906.42 because of the volunteers.

As a CIT, youth will serve as a mentor to the younger summer program participants and be an enthusiastic leader while making lifelong impressions on the lives of younger children.

Applications are now available for the 2020 Class of Counselors-in-Training. If your teenager between the ages of 14 and 18 is interested, contact the local 4-H office at 704.283.3735 or 704.283.3740.
