Thank you 4-H Volunteers

Thank you for volunteering with Henderson County 4-H! You are helping our kids grow into responsible and resilient adults. You are sharing skills with them that they may use for the rest of their lives.

NC State University has developed new rules for working with minors, in an effort to protect our children. Please complete the first two online applications by the end of February. Emily Capps, our Cooperative Extension Support Staff, can help you with them. Contact her at Emily_Capps@ncsu.edu or 828-697-4891.

  1. Enrollment in N.C. 4-H Online as a volunteer: 4HOnline
This will need to be updated each year. Be sure to include the project(s) that you work with. If you have a child in 4-H, their information will need to be updated each year also.
  2. Complete the NC State University Background Check. This starts with giving Emily your name and email address. When you receive an email from the NC State University background check office, follow the directions.

Each year we ask for a brief calendar of events for each 4-H club, for at least the first six months. We would also like an estimated time frame for each project group/ shooting sports group that will meet for the year.

When we report this information to NC State University, if you have not already watched the “Minors on Campus video,” they will send you an email, and record when you watch it. We have given NC State University the list of people who have watched the video at our office. The video has good information about keeping our kids safe.

NC State University also asks us to keep track of your volunteer hours. Monthly we will be emailing a link for you to complete, with an estimate of your volunteer hours, and the number of people that you reached with 4-H. Your volunteer hours are an invaluable investment in our youth, and this is NC State University’s way to publicize the true value of our volunteers.

There will be two Parent and Leader meetings this year:  Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. We will publicize these more later. All 4-H parents and volunteers are invited to these trainings/ discussions. We all enjoy learning what all of the different 4-H clubs are doing.

Henderson County Public Schools are offering free training for local volunteers who work with youth. The trainings were designed by the National Council for Behavioral Health for school staff, family members, health and human service workers, and volunteers who work with youth.

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid USA – helps participants recognize, understand, and support people facing a behavioral health concern or crisis
  • Trauma-Sensitive Schools – helps participants understand the impact of adverse childhood experiences, and respond by building resilience and avoiding re-traumatizing

These trainings will take place on Saturdays, February – April, but space is limited.

To register for one or more of these trainings, contact mwgruebmeyer@hcpsnc.org or call 828-697-4733. Please let Denise_Sherrill@ncsu.edu know if you participate in either of these trainings.

Thank you to all of our 4-H volunteers!
