Runner market types can be grown successfully in North Carolina. Depending on the buyer, high oleic varieties or varieties with “normal” fatty acid profiles are the options. Runner market types are less expensive to grow than Virginia market types due to a lower requirement for gypsum (half of the Virginia market type rate is recommended), a lower cost for establishing an ideal stand of 5 plants per foot of row (the smaller runner type seed results in fewer pounds required to plant the same acreage), and likely a lower seed cost. Runners typically do not need Apogee or Kudos to manage vine growth and this market type holds mature pods on during digging better than Virginia market types. Budgets in 2020 Peanut Information show runners to be close to $100/acre less expensive to grow than Virginia market types. This assumes that Apogee or Kudos would be applied to Virginia market types but not to runner market types. Runner market types often reach optimum maturity a week or so later than Virginia market types.

Fungicide programs for leaf spot and stem rot control relative to runner market types are similar to those for Virginia market types. Tomato spotted wilt resistance for runner market types is likely equal to or better than resistance for Virginia market types (runner market types were developed for the southeastern US where tomato spotted wilt is a major issue to contend with.)  Make sure fields are scouted for Sclerotinia blight in a timely manner. This disease is not an issue in the southeastern US, and for that reason resistance to this disease is not a focus of breeding programs in Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
