After staying indoors all winter long, we might be looking forward to the warmer weather and being able to finally enjoy the outdoors. This might include going hiking, gardening, swimming, playing sports and other types of physical activities. Although all of these activities can be a lot of fun for the entire family, there are a few things we should remember about exercising in hot weather.

  • Wear light colored, loose-fitting, lightweight clothes that can breathe, and do not forget to wear socks to prevent blisters and keep feet dry.
  • Check both the temperature and humidity level (avoid dangerous zone).
  • Choose the cooler time of the day (early morning or evening). Avoid the hottest time of the day, usually between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other non-caffeinated beverages. This is important even when swimming.
  • Eat snacks regularly, preferably fruits and vegetables.
  • Listen to your body and take frequent breaks to cool down.
  • Wear sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

If we keep these things in mind and take the proper precautions, it will help us reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Then we can truly take advantage of the warm weather and have some fun!
