No flower can lift someone’s spirits quite like sunflowers. Sunflowers are bright and cheery and known as the flower of summer. Whether they are dotting the landscape with their golden orbs or adding a festive touch to a picnic bouquet, they can’t help but bring a smile to your face.

Sunflowers are in the genus Helianthus, a large group consisting of more than 150 species of annuals and perennials. The perennial species are easy to care for, needing full sun and protection from the wind. Most thrive in well-drained soils, but some species can be considered aggressive spreaders in the garden although we commonly overlook any inconvenience due to the beauty of the blooms whenever they appear.

Sunflowers symbolize adoration, loyalty and longevity. Much of the meaning of sunflowers stems from its namesake, the sun itself. These flowers are unique in that they have the ability to provide energy in the form of nourishment and vibrancy—attributes which mirror the sun and the energy provided by its heat and light.

Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day.
