N.C. Cooperative Extension of Orange County Staff Recognized for Accomplishments at 2020 North Carolina Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals’ Annual Conference

North Carolina Cooperative Extension-Orange County Center staff were recognized during the 2020 North Carolina Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals’ Annual Conference held virtually on September 2, 2020.

Jonathon Smith, 4-H Youth Development Agent, was recognized with the T C Blalock Young Agent, 1-3 Year Award. Dr. Blalock began working as an Extension dairy specialist in 1951. He served as North Carolina’s 4-H leader from 1964-1970. Dr. Blalock also served as president of the 4-H Development Fund and the Cooperative Extension Fund. As a lifetime 4-H’er, Dr. Blalock was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2006. The T.C. Blalock Young Agent Award recognizes N.C. Cooperative Extension agents that conduct outstanding 4-H work based on accomplishments of the current year. Smith has been with the Orange County office since 2017.

Family & Consumer Sciences Agent Ivelisse Colón and Smith won the Communicator Award for their video entitled “Be Prepared – Not Scared” that shares useful tips for emergency preparedness. Their video can be found on the NC State Extension YouTube channel.

Smith and retired 4-H Program Associate Shelia Beasley won the state award for Excellence in Educational Technology for their integration of virtual reality goggles into afterschool dairy education programs conducted within county schools.

Smith was also recognized with the Excellence in Workforce Development Programming Award for his partnership with the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce on the Students Transforming Expectations & Exploring Real Opportunities program. This initiative seeks to expose county high school students to local career opportunities and pathways while developing soft skills needed to be successful in a career and in life.

Tyrone Fisher, Orange County Extension Director, applauds the efforts the Orange County 4-H program has made to reach all youth across the county. “Smith has been hitting home runs within the community, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has not slowed him nor the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Orange County programs down.”

The purpose of the North Carolina Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals is to promote the profession of Extension 4-H and youth work in North Carolina.  The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State Universities. More than 260,000 young people ages 5 through 18 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 16,700 adult and youth volunteers.
