Soon we will be experiencing the crisp cool, sunny days of fall with azure blue skies and leaves turning brilliant colors of yellow, orange, red, and purple.

It is a great time to plan a family outing where you can practice social distancing. Take a ride to view the fall foliage, visit an orchard to harvest apples, or visit a pumpkin patch to select a pumpkin. Check the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Visit North Carolina websites for ideas of places to see and visit.

I am a horticulturist and an ornamental gardener so I look forward to the cooler days of fall and working in my garden. I like to plant annuals that will survive most winters and if we have warm spells, will even provide flowers and color during the winter.

My favorite annual for fall planting is pansies. Others that work well are ornamental cabbage and kale and snapdragons. Planting now, gives these plants a chance to get established before frost and they will stand up to a cold winter better. In early spring, the pansies and snapdragon give you a jump start in the garden because they will grow and flower before most other plants.

Spring flowering bulbs are showing up in the garden centers and nurseries now, but don’t jump the gun and plant just yet. October and November are the best time for planting spring-flowering bulbs. When the temperatures cool to 50-60°F, that provides the ideal conditions the bulbs need to quickly and effectively set their roots.
