As the COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to stay indoors, many have turned to tending to plants as a way to turn their boredom to something productive. Often we see houseplants as mere decorations but there are a number of other benefits they provide. Please see this article for other interesting facts about people and houseplants during the pandemic:  https://www.trees.com/plants-improve-mental-health

Houseplants improve our psychological health. According to studies, indoor plants can boost positive emotions, reduce stress, and help relieve physical discomfort. Results show that hospital patients tend to recover quicker when their rooms have views of trees and nature. Houseplants have been proven to improve concentration and productivity. Thus, a lot of office spaces have indoor plants which helps the performance of the employees.

Plants can help us sleep better. There are a lot of essential oils made from houseplants which not only give off pleasant aroma but likewise induce a restful nights sleep. Houseplants such as snake plants have commonly been shown to emit oxygen and improve air quality which can be helpful in enclosed spaces.

Houseplants not only make our home’s aesthetics better by having positive perception on the interior, but they are vital. Humans are innately drawn to nature, which is called biophilia. Most people who are living in the urban areas, however, are not closely associated with nature for lack of trees and surrounding plants. Thus, having indoor plants reinforces our need to commune with nature.

It cannot be denied that plants in general have a lot of benefits to offer. Thus, people shouldn’t shy away from taking care of plants because of unavailability of space and time. Whether you are a “green thumb” or not, there are a number of houseplants that are among the most easily cared for plants and do not require constant attention. For example, the aloe vera plant seen on the left hand side in the picture below, only needs a good watering every couple of weeks.
