Winter Apple School is happening this year despite the COVID-19 pandemic. We will be holding the program virtually through Zoom and it will be a slightly abbreviated program. However, pesticide credits will be available and some great new information that you don’t want to miss. Despite not being able to meet in person, this is an event that always brings you the latest knowledge in apple production and will continue to do so albeit through a different format.
Winter Apple School is the signature apple meeting held in Western North Carolina for commercial apple growers and others interested in apple production. The program features a host of apple NC State Extension specialists and researchers from NC State University as the core of the program. Each of these speakers brings a unique discussion of apples from their various disciplines.
This year, Winter Apple School will be held on February 3, 2021. The program will be virtual over Zoom and will require internet access to connect. If you don’t have internet access, we can accommodate a limited number of people at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center to watch the program. If you need to come to the office to connect, please call (697-4891) and make your reservation. The program will run from 9:40 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for the morning session and from 1:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the afternoon session. You will need to attend both sessions to get all of your pesticide credits that are available.
A topic of great interest in this year’s program will highlight the changes in the apple insurance program that are coming in the next couple of years. Pam Bollinger from the USDA Risk Management Agency in Kansas City, MO and Alex Sorreno from the Raleigh office will be on hand to give the latest updates.
While you will not be able to visit exhibitors at this year’s meeting, there will be sponsors that we hope you will patronize. These sponsors make the school possible. Last year over 200 people attended Apple School. We hope that a similar number will be on hand for this year’s program.
An annual highlight of the meeting is the awards presentation during the BRAG Annual Meeting. The Apple Grower of the Year, Friend of the Apple Grower and Lifetime Achievement Awards are all distinguished honors announced at that time. These presentations will still occur as will the annual meeting.
The cost for attendance is only $35.00 for the entire program since there will be no lunch this year. However, this also entitles you to membership in the Blue Ridge Apple Growers Association for one year. What a bargain! Attendees who attend the entire program will receive two hours of pesticide credit. Registration is required by February 2 in order to send you the link for the meeting and receive payment. If you wait until the day of to register, there may be a delay before you get into the meeting
Registration forms and payment may be mailed to BRAG at P.O. Box 578, Edneyville, NC 28727 or dropped off at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center at 100 Jackson Park Drive, Hendersonville. Credit card payments can be accepted as well by contacting Ivy at Ivy_Olson@ncsu.edu. Registration forms can be obtained by clicking on the appropriate link below and are also available at the office or we will be happy to send you one via email.
