Competitors had a cold and wet but wonderful day at the 2021 State Hunter Skills 4-H Tournament held in Davy County. Young Naturalist 4-H Club represented Henderson County with 6 competitors!

For anyone who dislikes the cold, just imagine shooting a bow, rifle, and shotgun with cold fingers, walking through mud puddles, and taking on the rain but the 4-H’ers and volunteer coaches did it! And our Henderson County 4-H’ers did it well with Emma Wilkie placing second place overall individual and Miller Motes placing third place overall individual.

The competition was held outdoors with strict COVID-19 guidelines followed for the first 4-H State competition of the year. Hunter Skills is a rather new competition for NC 4-H Shooting Sports. Competitors must be well-rounded in their knowledge and skills for the different components. Individuals shoot three different disciplines (archery, rifle, and shotgun), identify wild animals, have their hunting knowledge tested, and finish with orienteering (map and compass skills used for navigating from point A to point B).

Congratulations to all of our Young Naturalist competitors!
