4-H Public Speaking

Confident public speaking is a crucial, but often overlooked and underdeveloped skill. Developing effective communication skills and techniques provide youth with a positive sense of self and higher levels of self-confidence. This empowers them to achieve and succeed in any situation they encounter.

Good public speakers are made – not born. The 4-H Public Speaking program allows youth to develop and practice these essential skills in a positive and fun learning environment. In this program, youth ages 8-18 research, write, practice, and deliver a 5-12 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. Youth ages 5-7 can also participate by presenting a two to four-minute presentation on the subject of their choice. Our 8 18-year-old participants may compete in our District Activity Day Competition.

This year, we will be conducting 4-H Presentations virtually. All Youth will submit a video of their presentations to the county for review and two videos per age group (6 in total) from each presentation category (30 categories) will be selected to represent Currituck County at District Activity Day 2021 (Virtual).

We will be holding our first presentation/public speaking workshop at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center located at 120 Community Way in Barco. We will provide information on topic selection, research and preparation, video requirements and techniques, rules and guidelines, and a timeline. This workshop will be delivered both in-person for a limited number of participants, and virtually (Zoom). To register for this program visit  https://publicspeaking_presentations.eventbrite.com. Once you have registered for either the in-person or virtual ticket, please visit 4-H Online to enroll in 4-H for the 2021 program year. If you cannot attend this session or have other questions please do not hesitate to contact us by email at slfischl@ncsu.edu.

Currently, in-person classes require masks to be worn for the duration of the class without exception. If you arrive without a mask one will be provided for you. We ask all participants to maintain six feet of distance while on the premises. We are following the current North Carolina mandates. If you are not able meet these requirements, or if you need accommodations for persons with disabilities please contact Sherry Fischlschweiger via email at sherry_fischlschweiger@ncsu.edu no later than ten business days before the event.
