Collapse ▲Ty Ancrum, the Program Assistant with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), has developed a partnership with Jaquetta Tyree, Restaurant Manager at Dandelion. Dandelion is a restaurant owned by Safelight, Inc, which is a nonprofit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Ty provided classes to a collective 5 participants, some of which are a victim of domestic violence.
Friday, March 26, 2021, Ty held the last class with Safelight/Dandelion as an outdoor activity held at the Park at Flat Rock. There were 6 adults and their children were in attendance. This class was in conjunction with Park Ranger Steven Tilloson, who works with Chimney Rock State Park. Jaquetta and Steven wanted to combine a holistic approach to better health and healing. Their thought process was to combine EFENP classes along with a class exploring outdoor trails and parks.
Steven provided an informative presentation of the racoon. He correlated how the racoon, an animal who is a voracious eater, eats a variety of healthy foods andunhealthy foods.In addition, Steven presented the children in attendance with physical activity books and essential trail tool kit (snacks, bandanna, and whistle).
After Steven’s presentation, 3 participants graduated from the Adult EFNEP class, having completed 10 nutrition classes.
After graduation, everyone took a relaxing walk on the trail and completed some of the exercises from the physical activity book. Each EFNEP participant received an EFNEP certificate of completion. In addition, each family received free tickets to Chimney Rock State Park.
