Collapse ▲Summer like weather has come barreling in with intense heat and humidity and the delicate flush of spring is long gone! Dogwood blossoms and weeping cherry flowers are gone for another year but that’s okay. Because anyone who happens to have the Kleim’s Hardy dwarf gardenia growing in their landscape, knows that the good times are just starting.
Long prized for their intense and pleasing fragrance, gardenias don’t fare so well in our county. The winter temps are just too cold for them to grow and flower well. But Kleim’s Hardy handles the Burke County winters like a champ and suffers from winter damage rarely.
Kleim’s Hardy gardenia is a dwarf plant, growing to 2 to 3 feet high with a spread of 2 to 3 feet. It can take full sun and heat and has a beautifully mounded shape. It is an evergreen shrub with attractive, glossy foliage. Flowering begins in late spring and continues throughout the summer. A light trim after intense blooming will insure many more flower to follow.
These shrubs are readily available in area nurseries and are a must for the gardener who enjoys the heady fragrance of gardenia, because fragrant they are!
