This summer we planned five programs: Go Fish; Sew Much Fun; Introduction to Photography; Recycled Racers; and Music to My Ears. So far we’ve had a ton of fun with Go Fish and Sew Much Fun! In Go Fish we focused on Biomedical Engineering, and learning how engineers solve real world problems. Then in Sew Much Fun we had a great time learning the basics of sewing, making some really awesome bags!

This week we explored the creative medium of photography, using a smart phone camera as our tool. While we can get really wonderful photos by just pointing and tapping that little button, there is a lot of ways to improve your photography skills.

We started by learning about White Balance. This is the color temperature of light used in your photo, as well as, the reflective power of white and other light colors. Our 4-Hers began by taking photos and making sure that their photo had now burnout, and the most realistic  colors.

Then we learned about perspective. All perspective is, is wear the photographer choses to place the camera in relation to the subject. Which might sound elementary, but as you can see, can result in some very cool photos.

Learning Perspective

Then we talked about composition and framing. When setting up a shot consider what you chose to place in the photo. What’s your foreground, midground, and background. Then moving on to other types of framing such as ‘Leading Lines’ which draw the viewers gaze through the photo. Then fill the frame, and using negative space.

Laerning Framing

Then we moved on to lighting, how different types of light: warm, cool, and natural, can add different tones to your photo. Which grows into lighting positions, which also affect to the mood and theme of a photo.

Using Shadow

Those are all basic, on our last day we moved on to abstract photography. Abstract photography opens things up to be unbelievably creative. If you would like to see more of the truly creative shots you can check them out on our website and social media.
