Does the holiday season stress you out? Do you often wonder if you’ve given too much or too little? Do you feel like you’ve been around the world in 80 days from the many hours of travel? The holiday season can be a time of great stress, sacrifice, financial burden, and emotional heartache. Although the holiday seasonfeet with slippers on, propped on ottoman with coffee or tea brings these challenges and more; we oftentimes exacerbate the problem by not resting and relaxing for recovery.
In order to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves and reducing stress, we may need to take time to rest and relax. We have a few steps and tips in order to help you rest and relax this Holiday Season.

  • Mindfulness is simply taking the time to reflect on the events, activities, and thoughts that make up your daily life. Remember to make time for the things that you love and incorporate your friends and family. Whether that be quiet time/reflection, exercise, games, good traditions, the great outdoors, or a good book. These things will allow you to relax and decompress which may lead to greater rest. Also, take time to be by yourself in order to simply take your mind off of the long to-do list.
  • Wholesome diet. Eating a wholesome diet can lead to better sleep thereby allowing your body to rest and recover better. Eating foods rich in vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, melatonin, and iron can contribute to getting better sleep. Check out this reference in order to get a list of foods.
  • Discipline and planning can greatly reduce stress. We are all familiar with planning but we really don’t think about discipline. Being disciplined while we plan ahead can save us time, money, and an emotional toll. For example, if we only plan to spend a certain amount on gifts, don’t deviate from that plan at the cost of financial strain. Or, if you plan to be more mindful in your eating, stick with that plan instead of giving in to indulgence which will leave you lethargic and guilty leading to a lack of rest.Chairs on a lake dock.
  • Make sure to get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep can greatly reduce your stress and allow your body to recover. Why does recovery matter? It matters so that your body can operate at an optimal level. This includes maintaining a strong immune system, high energy levels, toxin removal, and repairing the muscles that have been used.
  • Take breaks to move and breathe deeply during the day. This will allow you to get out and walk or stretch in. This will also give you some time to get fresh air and incorporate some deep breathing exercises.
