The first full week of February is Burn Awareness Week. Join us online @persongranvillefcs on Facebook or Instagram and learn about this year’s theme “Burning Issues in the Kitchen”. Cooking is the number one cause of home fires. Keep a pan lid and potholders or oven mitts nearby every time you cook. Turn your pot or pot handles towards the back of the stove and wear proper clothing such as s short sleeve shirt. If your food does catch on fire, cover the pan with its lid or place a cookie sheet on top of it. Then turn the heat off. Never use water to put out a kitchen fire. Water will cause the oil to splatter and spread the fire or scald you. After cooking, be sure to check the kitchen appliances to make sure you turned everything off such as all of the stovetop burners. And stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling or broiling food. More information and factsheets can be found on the American Burn Association website at ameriburn.org

Chili with Red Beans – serves 8

1 medium onion

½ lb. extra-lean ground beef or turkey

2 (15oz) cans red kidney beans

1 (28oz) can chopped tomatoes

1 Tbsp garlic powder

1-2 Tbsp chili powder

Spray large pot with non-stick cooking spray. Peel onion and chop into ¼ inch pieces. Place chopped onion in skillet. Add the ground beef and cook meat with onion over medium heat. Cook until meat is browned and onion is soft. Drain. Add undrained beans, tomatoes, garlic powder and chili powder to cooked meat and onions. Stir to mix well. Bring to a boil and cook slowly for 10-15 minutes.
