Collapse ▲Members of the Northwood High School FFA chapter represented Chatham County well in the 2022 Youth Cattle Working Contest on March 22nd. This contest included a written test on beef cattle, tool identification, breed identification, feed identification, a beef quality assurance test, and working two cattle through the chute. Teams had to work together to catch the cattle in the head gate, give vaccinations, dewormer, and practice recordkeeping based on beef quality assurance techniques and principles for low stress handling.
The Northwood High School FFA chapter had two teams in this competition: Northwood Gold and Northwood Green. The Northwood Gold team included Carleigh Burger, Nicholas Nielson, and Macy Griffin. This team placed 5th overall. The Northwood Green team included Victoria Smith, Oliver Nielson, and Landon Roberson. This team place 2nd overall and will be moving on to the state competition on April 4th, 2022.
We are very grateful for the cattle producers in Chatham County who allowed the teams to practice on their farms in order to prepare for this competition. This team is coached by Laura Smith, Lindsay Davis, and Kristina Britt.
