The Rutherford County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners class of 2021-2022 invites young people ages 9-13 to participate in our

Growing Gardeners program: Shoots and Roots.

What’s involved?
  • Orientation will be held May 24, 2022, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension office (193 Callahan Koon Road in Spindale). Each participant must be accompanied by their guardian. Along with a light supper, master gardeners will present informative sessions on garden planting options, plants, seeds, soil, insects, and diseases. Essential gardening supplies will be provided to all youth participants.
  • Gardeners will then be able to implement what they learned at home in containers or in-ground gardens or raised beds. Master Gardeners will visit with you twice throughout the summer to help with any troubleshooting and mentor with gardening help and advice.
  • An end-of-the-season celebration will be held on August 30, 2022, from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Do I need to have gardening experience?
Participants and guardians need no experience, just the desire to get outside and an interest in growing something. Success is not always guaranteed but confidence-building and volunteer support are.
How do I sign my child up?
  • Registration is available in person at the Extension office, by phone, 828-287-6010, or on Eventbrite.
  • The cost to participate is $5.00 which will go toward program t-shirts.
  • If you would like to participate and would like a scholarship please contact our Horticulture Agent, Hannah Bundy at hmbundy@ncsu.edu or 828-287-6015.
