Collapse ▲Warm season grasses, with the rain and the heat, should be growing fast and producing lots of foliage to smother weeds. This vigorous growth will help prevent some of the winter weeds from being so numerous this fall and winter. For all but Centipede grass, it’s time make the final application of fertilizer for the summer. This last fertilizer application will help the grass finish the summer strong in preparation for winter dormancy. The better the coverage of the lawn the less likely it is that winter weeds will be an issue.
With all the humidity and rain in our area, be cautious not to water too frequently. Gray leaf spot and large patch disease can start to become active in August. By watering infrequently and deeply, about twice a week if needed, this should reduce the likelihood of these two diseases becoming a big problem in the lawn. If they have been a problem in the lawn in the past couple of years, a preventative spray will help reduce the chance of having the same problem again this year.
