N.C. Cooperative Extension – Avery County Center will host a Pesticide Applicator School on April 10-11, 2024. The school will be held at the Avery Community Center (Heritage Park), 661 Vale Road, Newland, NC. The school begins Wednesday, April 10th, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and concludes on Thursday, April 11th,  8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Exams will be administered at 1:00 p.m.

All attendees must register for the Pesticide School by contacting the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Avery County Center at 828-733-8270.

Exam Registration Information

Please email PesticideExams@ncagr.gov for in-person exam registration. Include your full name, phone number, test(s) you would like to take, and the date and location of the exam session you would like to attend. You will receive a confirmation email once you are signed up. You may also contact NCDA at 984-236-4594 or Avery County Cooperative Extension at 828-733-8270 to register for the exam.

*EXAM FEES are separate and paid to the NCDA&CS at the exam location. All exam fees will be collected on the day of exam; check or money order payable to NCDA&CS or exact cash (unable to make change) are the only acceptable forms of payment at this time.  find the link below with information on exam fees.
Exam Fee Information

At this time, we offer the following exams in Spanish: Ag Pest Plant, Core, Ornamental & Turf, Private Applicator, Right-of-Way, and Soil Fumigation (Private & Commercial).

  • All exams begin at 1:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
  • Government issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license, must be shown at the time of the exam check-in.
  • All Public Operator examinees must know the correct name and mailing address of the agency for which they work.
  • Training material may be obtained from NC State Pesticide Safety Education Office, Box 7609, Raleigh, NC 27695, Telephone 919-515-3113.

In order to legally purchase and apply “restricted use pesticides,” you must be certified and licensed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. If you need a pesticide license to purchase restricted-use pesticides, apply pesticides as a part of your job, or want to be a commercial applicator, you will need to attend the pesticide school and take an exam to obtain a license.
