NC Kikos, owned and operated by Clinton Walker in Lawndale, NC, was recently awarded an $8,000 Western NC Agricultural Options grant to help finance an innovative project that will expand the information stored inside the Radio Frequency Identification (RFD ID) chips used to register goats with the National Kiko Registry (NKR). The project, supported by NC State Extension, will enhance the NKR registration process by allowing the breeder to electronically store additional data about the animal’s pedigree, nutritional and vaccination history, chain of custody, breeder contact information, and birthing data. Access to this important data will benefit the meat goat industry by helping buyers make more informed decisions prior to purchasing breeding purebred Kiko breeding stock.
