SeedsCome celebrate something new and excited for McDowell County gardeners and soon-to-be gardeners. The Grand Opening of the Seed Share at the Marion Library is set for Saturday, March 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Many fun activities have been planned for the grand opening.

The Master Gardeners will be giving away Ready to Plant Winter Sowing Containers that Master Gardeners will help you plant. There will be FREE seeds, gardening books, and magazines. A free drawing for a basket of gardening-related items will be held. Face painting for the kiddos–garden-themed, of course. And finally, an Ask A Master Gardener Booth–a chance to ask your gardening questions. Don’t miss out on a fun, educational opportunity! Just in time for planting season!

A Little about Seed Share at the Marion Library

The Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of McDowell County along with many citizens who are passionate about seed saving and sharing have been working diligently on opening a seed library at the Marion Branch of the McDowell County Library system. This effort is being led by Ms. Linda Mystic, Master Gardener volunteer. The kickoff meeting was held in September, 2022, and the group has met regularly to establish this wonderful offering to McDowell County citizens.

It has been great to witness the coming together of different folks who want to see this as an offering of the McDowell County Library system. The library is full of resources, and this will just add to it.

SeedsSeed donations have been coming in from different companies and organizations to help the seed library get started. The seed library will be dependent on donations from the public for it to remain viable. We are appreciative of the $400 grant received from Marion Rotary. These funds will be used to assist with the cost of seeds, printing educational materials, purchasing seed envelopes, signage, educational speakers, and a grand opening event.
