Spring Clean Out Day

You’re Invited to Spring Clean Out Day!

Spring will be here very soon, and and many of us will begin our annual Spring cleaning! In partnership with the Local Government Credit Union (LGFCU), the North Carolina Cooperative Extension  – Cherokee County Center is excited to invite you to our Spring Clean Out Day! The event will be held on March 22nd, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be located at our meeting room location at 699 Connahetta Street, Murphy (the rock gym parking area). See our offerings below.

Paper Shred Truck

Bring your boxes of documents to the event to have them shredded for free! It’s a convenient and easy way to not only get the clutter out of your home, but feel assured that the information is securely destroyed.

  • No need to remove the staples, paperclips or folders from your documents.
  • This service is for personal documents only – no business or commercial shredding. (Limit 3 document boxes or 75 lbs)

Medication Drop

Check your medication cabinet for expired or unused meds and bring them to our medication drop provided by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

  • No sharps allowed.

Learn how to Combat Identity Theft 

A representative from the LGFCU will be providing a presentation on how to combat identity theft. This is a presentation can help you and your family be proactive in not becoming victim to those who want to steal your personal information.

  • According to the Federal Trade Commission, a few signs that you may be victim to identity theft are:
    • You see withdrawals from your bank account that you can’t explain.
    • Debt collectors call you about debts that aren’t yours.
    • You find unfamiliar accounts or charges on your credit report.
    • Medical providers bill you for services you didn’t use.
    • Your health plan rejects your legitimate medical claim because the records show you’ve reached your benefits limit.
    • A health plan won’t cover you because your medical records show a condition you don’t have.
    • The IRS notifies you that more than one tax return was filed in your name, or that you have income from an employer you don’t work for.
    • You get notice that your information was compromised by a data breach at a company where you do business or have an account.

Decluttering 101

Do you want to declutter but don’t know where to start? You may have one or a few places in your home that you just avoid because of the clutter. Marlana Baker, Extension agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension will walk you through some techniques on sorting and getting rid of your items as well as some tips and tricks to make it easier to start decluttering and stay organized.
