Pitt County 4-H Chicken Project

The Pitt County 4-H Chicken Project is open to all youth ages 4-18, living in Pitt County. All Participants ages 5 and up must be registered in 4-H Online at nc.4honline.com. 4-H Online sign up should be no later than June 1, 2023.

Note: Youth ages 4-7 are classified as non-competitive in 4-H, but will be eligible to show and will receive a ribbon.

Project Rules:

  • Each participant may provide their own chicken or purchase up to 5 chicks from the 4-H Office.
  • Participants are required to attend the showmanship orientation. Orientation will be held on July 11, at 10:00 a.m. Participants will learn about proper care of their chickens, showmanship, show prep, nutrition, and more. You are encouraged to bring a chicken to the orientation to practice with.
  • Participants will raise the chicks to maturity (or until the Show) under the supervision of their guardians and Extension Agent.
  • The chickens will be checked for diseases and/or complications before the PittCounty Fair Show. Diseased birds will NOT be eligible to show.
  • If you experience a bird fatality, please call or email the Extension agent IMMEDIATELY.
  • Participants will be responsible for all expenses incurred while raising them (i.e. feed, medication, facility, etc.). If you need a poultry veterinarian, please ask your 4-H or Livestock Extension agent.
  • Participants are to complete an Expressive Arts Submission related to their chicken project. This is to be turned in no later than August 4th, 2023.
    • Entries could Include but not limited to:
      • Artistic Expression Contests: The Artistic Expression contests provide an educational opportunity for participants to exhibit their artistic skills pertaining to their chicken project.
        • Photo collage poster
        • Social media video – highlighting the whole project (from chick to chicken)
        • Creative drawings
      • Creative Writing
        • Short Story or Essay highlighting their chicken project experience from chick to chicken.

Pitt County Fair Show Rules:

  • The Pitt County 4-H Show is open to all youth ages 4 to 18 the day of the show.
  • The show will be held on September 24 at 1 p.m.
  • Exhibitors may enter a total of four birds in the Poultry Show
  • All poultry not current on inspection must be brought to the fairgrounds between 12-4 p.m. Tuesday, September 20th for inspection by NCDA.
  • There will be 4 age divisions of Showmanship: 4-7, 8- 10, 11-14 and 15-18
  • Poultry classes will be divided by type and sex
  • Birds may be kept on exhibition at the fair all week for a $15 per head premium
