4-H Summer Fun

4-H Summer Fun is a collection of educational workshops, tours, and hands-on activities planned especially for Rutherford County youth. This special program is designed to give youth positive learning opportunities and focus on developing life skills. Summer Fun is made possible by dedicated 4-H volunteers and N.C. Cooperative Extension Center, Rutherford County Center staff. 4-H invites all children to participate in the Fun.

4-H is a non-formal youth development organization and is open to all youth, Age 5-18 in Rutherford County. All fees are for educational supplies, resources, admission fees, limited insurance, and refreshments. Limited insurance will be provided for all participants.

All 4-H participants must be registered as Members in 4-H Online for all waivers and health forms. These must be completed and approved no later than 2 days before the participant’s first session. Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made at least 2 weeks prior to the class, to Cynthia Robbins at 828-287-6190 or cynthia_robbins@ncsu.edu. Registration will open on Wednesday, May 31 at 9:00 a.m. After then, you may register during regular office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration will be taken in person only. No registration willbe accepted by telephone. Payment is due at the time of registration. Activities are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register only one child per form. Refunds will only be made if choice of class is canceled.

Sessions include:

NASCAR  – Wednesday, June 7,  8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Do you feel the need for speed? We will tour the NASCAR Hall of Fame on our way to Victory Lane and learn what it takes to be on a pit crew and drive a race car. We will participate in a workshop where we will learn how to design a race car and get to bring home your creation. We will meet at the Extension office and travel together.

Ages: 9-14                                         Cost: $25

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Souvenir money is optional.

Raptors and More – Monday, June 12  8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

What is the different between a Raptor and a Bird of Prey? Come learn and see the differences first hand! We will visit the Carolina Raptor Center and Latta Nature Preserve in Huntersville. We will meet at the Extension office and travel together.

Ages: 9-13                                        Cost: $20

What to bring: Bagged lunch, drink, and refillable water bottle. Wear good walking shoes. Souvenir money is optional.

Mooving with Milk – Friday, June 23, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

We will explore the wonderful world of Dairy! We will learn about dairy cows and how they make milk for us to drink! We will sample different dairy products and make a few of our own. (Participants should have completed Kindergarten before attending.)

Ages: 5-8                              Cost: $15

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink.

Plants and Pollinators – Monday-Wednesday, June 26-28,  9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

This three-day camp will be perfect for kids who are curious about plants and how they grow, as well as the types of plants and insects that make it possible for us to enjoy flowers and fruit. We’ll get our hands dirty with planting, make some fun garden crafts, and get a really good look decomposers, bees, and other pollinators. This will be a great camp to connect kids to the natural environment via plants and insect friends.

Ages: 9-12                                        Cost: $30

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink each day. Wear closed-toe shoes.

Pollinator Pals – Thursday-Friday, June 29-30, 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

This two-day camp for younger children will have them learning about pollinators, including butterflies, bees and more! We will go on a nature walk, play insect games, plant pollinator plants, study habitats, life cycles, and more! (Participants should have completed Kindergarten before attending.)

Ages: 5-8                                          Cost: $25

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink.

 

Gone Fishing– Thursday, July 6, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

We will travel up to the Marion Fish Hatchery to see how fish are raised to stock your favorite fishing streams and ponds. We will enjoy a few hours of fishing in well-stocked pond. Fishing rods, bait and materials will be supplied.

Ages: 9-14                                         Cost: $12

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear sunscreen and bring hat or sunglasses and a towel.

  

Kids and Chefs – Monday-Friday, July 10-14, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This hands-on day camp is taught by local chefs and Cooperative Extension staff with a focus on agriculture and nutrition. Each day of camp features cooking, games, and crafts. Participants will learn about farm production, food selection, cooking techniques, etiquette, and safe food handling. All supplies will be provided. Youth who love to try new foods will love this class! Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Ages: 10-13                                       Cost: $110

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink for Monday only. Wear closed toe shoes each day.

Magic of Electricity– Wednesday, August 9, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Learn about electricity! Do you know how the electricity runs through your house and makes the lights come on? Come join us for a fun filled time of learning about electricity. We will have the power company there to tell us about careers, do Magic of Electricity activities as well as make a project of your own to take home.

Ages: 10-14                                       Cost: $12

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink.

Sweet Confections- Thursday, August 10, 10:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

We will learn how to make different types of candy and treats such as fudge, haystacks, lollipops, mints, candied nuts, and more. Participants will learn how to use candy-making equipment, follow a recipe, prepare a variety of party foods, and package them for sharing. Each participant will receive a recipe booklet. Containers and packaging will be provided.

Ages: 10 and up                                Cost: $ 18

4-H Residential Camp – Sunday-Friday, July 23-28

Campers will travel with Mrs. Cynthia to Millstone 4-H Camp in Ellerbe, NC to spend a 5 days/nights at 4-H camp. Millstone is located in the sandhills of North Carolina. Campers will sleep in cabins with cabin counselors and enjoy daytime activities including nature, field games, arts and crafts, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, archery, low ropes course with a giant swing! Transportation is included.

Ages: 8-13                                        Cost: $525 (Partial scholarships are available.)

What to bring: A detailed list will be sent out to families.
