Creating and Editing a Course - Quick Guide

To create a course in the REPORTER system you must have the Course Admin role. Once you are a course admin you can login at go.ncsu.edu/reporter to begin creating courses. When you are creating a new course, you are given the option to create a new course or copy an existing course. When you copy an existing course, a new course will open in edit mode with most fields with the copied course’s data.

1)

After logging in, locate the Activity Management menu option from the dark gray left sidebar menu.

2)

Once you click this option it should expand more menu options. From here, select Courses & Instances.

This will take you to the Course Search page.

3)

From the Course Search page, you will be able to initiate the creation of a new course. You will have the option to create a new course from scratch, or to copy an existing course to create a new one.

4)

You will then complete the details of the course starting with the Course ID.

The following fields will require attention on this step:

  • College/Division Prefix
  • Department/Unit or Course Number
  • Extended Course Number (Optional)
  • Titles
  • Course Description

The first details you will need to provide for the course make up the unique Course ID that will be used for your course.

Your Course ID is a two or three-part code that is used to identify the course in addition to the title. This ID is made up of three parts, with the third being optional, broken up by hyphens.

The full Course ID must be unique and cannot be reused on multiple courses (Be sure to update this if you copied an existing course.)

Course ID will display once you fill in the required fields, as seen in the following clip:

5)

Then, you will need to make sure you have Course Admins listed, yourself included

Once you’ve filled in the basic details, you will go to the “Course Admin” section to list everyone you want to have access to edit and manage the course. Please note that this includes the creator -- you will need to list yourself in the Course Admins section in order to access the course in the future.

If there is an active employee or student that needs access but doesn’t show in the search results, please contact REPORTER_Support@ncsu.edu to request the user be given the Course Admin role.  Once they have the role, they will be able to create courses and can be given access to any existing courses.

6)

After you select Save OR Next you should receive confirmation that your Course has been created.

Modifying a Course -

Course search allows you to search all course records (this includes those not published to the course catalog) and you can open any course you have been given access to in edit mode. To get to the course search, expand the Course Management menu item on the left sidebar and select Course Search. You will be brought to a search page where you can search for courses and select them to View, Edit, Copy, or Delete. Just highlight the course you want by clicking on it, select Edit, and the course will open in edit mode as seen when creating the course:
