Youth Education at the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park

The Youth Education Program at the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park is designed for third grade students. Students will learn about plant science through hands-on lessons while gaining an appreciation for gardens through on-site activities. We are limited in what we can cover during a field trip and in how many classes we can accomodate each year. The resources here are intended to supplement the activities during Youth Education but can also be used on their own for whatever educational need you have.

Lessons in the Arboretum Youth Education Program will address the following NC Essential Standard for Grade 3 Science: 3.L.2 Understand how plants survive in their environments.

Tinkerspace: Creative Gardening

The Tinkerspace: Creative Gardening program is designed to be taught as a 5-session unit that will consist of DIY activities with instructional videos and learning modules. The lessons build on each other in sequence, but you can also use them individually in whatever way suits you best. All the units are available for free through this website. Students will learn about plant parts, what plants need to grow, and how plants are important to people. Lessons can be adapted to suit a variety of age groups, but may be most suitable to students in elementary and middle school.
