AUDIENCE

The Chatham Green Industry and Landscape Conference provides continuing education and re-certification credits for green industry professionals, including landscapers, grounds and turf managers, and greenhouse and nursery producers. Home gardeners, HOA grounds managers, and anyone interested in these topics are also welcome to attend.

Note that the NCDA&CS Pesticide CEUs are administered in two blocks, so you must attend the entire morning and/or the entire afternoon to receive credit. The NCLCLB and ISA CEUs are administered as a single block, so you must attend the entire conference to receive CEU credits.

7:00 – 7:30 a.m.- Check-in

7:30 – 8:25 a.m. – Extension Resources and Perennials as Shrub Alternatives Matt Jones  and Amanda Wilkins  will review helpful resources from Extension related to plant selection, disease and pest diagnoses, Integrated Pest Management, and turf management. We’ll also suggest functional and attractive herbaceous perennial alternatives.

8:30 – 9:25 a.m. – A Little Rot or A Lot of Rot Means It’s Time to See the Doctor

In this case, though, not your primary care physician, but a ‘Tree Doctor’. While we do not call ourselves Tree Doctors anymore, arborists do have specialized training that helps them see the trees differently. In this presentation, Dr. Barbara Fair  will give landscape professionals some tips and techniques to help you perform a general assessment of tree health, recognize issues that might contribute to failure of parts of the whole or the whole, and help minimize potential risk. Then, we will talk about when it is time to bring in the Doc.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, Dr. Fair obtained degrees from both Penn State and Ohio State University in Forestry and Horticulture. She is currently an Associate Professor at NC State University where she serves as the Landscape Extension Specialist for North Carolina. Her program, including research, focuses on arboricultural practices from thoughtful plant selection to proper planting and tree maintenance practices. She also teaches Landscape Ecosystem Management, Green Infrastructure, and Environmental Stress Physiology. Dr. Fair has been a Certified Arborist since 1998.

9:30 – 10:25 a.m. – Organic Lawn Care Dr. Grady Miller provides an overview of the keys to successful lawn care that emphasizes proper site selection and preparation, turfgrass selection, optimal planting times, and integrated pest management approaches.

Dr. Miller directs his extension efforts toward general turfgrass management. The focus of his research program is to improve sports field, golf course, urban turfgrass, and utility turfgrass quality through evaluation of turfgrass management practices and procedures. His research activities are centered on cultivar evaluation, irrigation practices, turfgrass nutrition, and athletic field maintenance practices. Dr. Miller’s training was at Louisiana Tech University (B.S.), Louisiana State University (M.S.) and Auburn University (Ph.D.). Prior to coming to NCSU, he was a Professor at the University of Florida. In 2006 he was appointed Professor of Turfgrass Science at North Carolina State University with extension, research, and teaching appointments.

10:30 – 11:25 a.m. – Moles and Voles: Identification and Control in the Home Landscape. Learn how to distinguish between the feeding preferences, behaviors, and control strategies of moles and voles from Marshall Warren, Horticulture Agent at the N.C. Cooperative Extension – Johnston County Center. 

Marshall Warren is the Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Extension Agent
in Johnston County since 2015. Marshall currently works with ornamental
nurseries, greenhouse operators, and commercial landscape companies, as well
as recruiting, training and managing over 100 Master Gardener volunteers, their
programs, and educating the public. Marshall has been involved in horticulture
since childhood working in the family nursery business. After graduation in 1985
from NCSU in Landscape Horticulture, he built a residential landscape design build
business from then until 2007. Marshall currently has an online gardening pest
control product business. He earned his Master of Horticultural Science Degree in
2021.

12:30 p.m. – 1:25 p.m. Trees and the Urban World Collide!

Utility lines, concrete, and trees oh my! In this talk Travis Black will review the challenges when managing trees in the urban environment. He will review past work when managing tree roots and hardscapes, and provide recommendations when managing trees in your backyard.

Travis has a B.S. in Landscape Design and a Master of Horticultural Science (Urban Forestry) from NC State University. He is a TCIA Tree Care Specialist, NC Certified Plant Professional, ISA Certified Arborist (including Tree Risk Assessment), and NCDA Licensed pesticide applicator.

1:30 p.m. – 2:25 p.m. . Understanding Pesticide Labels Join NCDA Pesticide Inspector Tyler Harran for a discussion on reading and interpreting pesticide labels.

Tyler has been a pesticide inspector for the NCDA&CS since 2019, having previously served as a research technician at Oregon State University developing wheat cultivars. He has B.S. in Agroecology from the University of Wyoming.

2:25 -2:45 p.m. – Wrap-up, CEU verification, and evaluations
