Leave the Leaves (Xerces Society)
The New Hope Audubon Chapter is advocating for backyard bird habitat through their Bird-Friendly Habitat Certification program and promotes Leaves the Leaves because, of course, all those critters in the leaf litter
help feed the birds!
Leaf Litter Critters and the Forest Ecosystem
Life in the Leaf Litter is a beautifully illustrated 25-page pamphlet published by the American Museum of Natural History. It describes the function of leaf litter in the forest ecosystem and introduces the smaller critters in the litter, which most folks never see, one by one in plain language.
Life in the Leaf Little ID Card can be downloaded and printed on cardstock for folks to use in identifying the critters they find in the leaf litter.
Structures for Wildlife is a good place to go if you’re looking for information on how to build a brush pile to provide protection from predators for some of our smaller wildlife species.
