Two seeds in an open palmThe Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of McDowell County along with many citizens who are passionate about seed saving and sharing have been working diligently on opening a seed library at the Marion Branch of the McDowell County Library system. This effort is being led by Ms. Linda Mystic, Master Gardener volunteer. The kickoff meeting was held in September, 2022, and the group has met regularly to establish this wonderful offering to McDowell County citizens.

It has been great to witness the coming together of different folks who want to see this as an offering of the McDowell County Library system. The library is full of resources, and this will just add to it.

Seed donations have been coming in from different companies and organizations to help the seed library get started. The seed library will be dependent on donations from the public for it to remain viable. We are appreciative of the $400 grant received from Marion Rotary. These funds will be used to assist with the cost of seeds, printing educational materials, purchasing seed envelopes, signage, educational speakers, and a grand opening event.

A Seed Propagation class led by Master Gardeners of McDowell County will be held on Thursday, February 16, 1:30 p.m. at the McDowell Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion.  This class is free and open to the public. New to gardening and want to learn from an expert? This might just be for you!

The Grand Opening of the Seed Share at the Marion Library is set for Saturday, March 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Just in time for planting season!
