The Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show was held on April 11th and 12th in Hillsborough, North Carolina. This show included beef cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats and had around 115 youth participating. One of our Chatham County 4-Hers, Lilli Pilkington, brought her lamb, Dolly, to the show on April 12th. Lilli was selected to participate in the Leap into Sheep Program through NC State back in December 2022, which included learning all about sheep, showmanship, animal husbandry, as well as raising and training a lamb to show. Lilli has been working with her lamb, Dolly, for several months to prepare her for the show. As a part of the Leap into Sheep Program, Lilli was assigned a mentor to help her through the process. Lilli’s mentors were Dan Wells (Johnston County Livestock Extension Agent) and his daughter Anna Wells, who worked with Lilli and her lamb constantly.

Lilli and her lamb competed in the Lamb Showmanship class, where the judge selects winners based on how the youth works with and sets up their lamb. Lilli and her lamb were selected as the Reserve Champion in the Senior Division for Lamb Showmanship. She also competed in the Breeding Ewe Class, where the judge selects a winner based on the conformation and several maternal characteristics of the animal.

Lilli was also awarded the Rob Hogan Leadership & Stewardship Award for her commitment to learning, animal welfare, and environmental conservation with her livestock project. This award is provided by Ann Hogan Leonard in memory of Rob Hogan and is awarded to an exhibitor who is dedicated to leadership development in 4-H and/or FFA and who has excelled with their livestock project.

We are incredibly proud of Lilli and thankful to her mentors and everyone who helped her along the way on this journey.
