Henderson County Commercial Vegetable & Small Fruit agent Karen Blaedow was recognized this week with the NC State University Award for Excellence. Her impactful work with Henderson County tomato and blackberry growers as well as her involvement in further developing the local tailgate markets were achievements that helped propel her to win the award.

The Award for Excellence is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon non-faculty employees. This award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of individual employees, above and beyond an employee’s normal job responsibilities.

“Karen’s work has provided exceptional service to her clientele that have allowed them to increase production and cut costs,” said Henderson County Extension Director Terry Kelley. “Her clientele is always confident that Karen is working to enhance their sustainability and to provide research-based information.”

Karen won in the category of customer service and was the only winner from Cooperative Extension. Out of 278 nominations, there were 55 selected as winners from their respective colleges. Then, Karen was one of only 12 selected for the University honor. She will automatically qualify as a nominee for the Governor’s Award for Excellence which will be announced later in the year.
