Little children boy and girl sitting on forest ground exploring and learning about nature and insects. Looking at a black bug.

Do you love insects and find yourself looking for them everywhere you go?

Exploring insects through hands-on activities and projects has never been easier because North Carolina 4-H has clubs and program opportunities in every county across the state. 4-H has a lot of curriculum that helps kids discover the importance of insects that provide ecosystem services like pollination, decomposition, pests predation and more. Clubs can work with local beekeepers and learn how to keep bees or maybe volunteer with a local park to plant a pollinator garden. The opportunities are endless.

And one of the best ways to learn about insects is going out into the world and observing them and sometimes collecting them for further study.

If you are willing to submit your insect collection to the North Carolina State Fair 4-H Entomology Contest, then we would like to help get you started by sending you an insect collection kit. Here’s how:

  1. Enroll in NC 4-H Online > select your county > enter all the relevant information.
  2. Reach out to your local 4-H agent and tell them you enrolled and would like to get started with 4-H in your county.
  3. Ask them what clubs or program opportunities they have with entomology.
  4. Email liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu and “cc” your 4-H agent and the NC 4-H Grow For It program will mail you your kit!
  5. Register for the NC 4-H Entomology Insect Collection at the North Carolina State Fair by September 15th of each year. For more information, view the contest details and rules.
