The Penland Senior Center has become a hub of activity, not only for enjoying the social activities and delicious food, but also for taking proactive steps to ensure the well-being of our senior community. A very special program, “A Matter of Balance,” kicked off on October 5th and will continue to run until October 31, offering participants the knowledge and skills they need to prevent falls and maintain their independence.

Leading the sessions is certified instructor, Marlana Baker, who also serves as the Family and Consumer Science Agent at the Cherokee County Extension. With her extensive background in health and wellness, Marlana ensures that participants receive guidance on fall prevention techniques and exercises that can enhance their stability and confidence.

Moreover, Dana Love, a dedicated volunteer certified in personal training, plays an essential role in assisting the program. Her passion for helping seniors maintain their quality of life shines through as she assists participants in various exercises and discussions during the sessions.

  2. Enhancing Strength and Balance: Practical exercises are taught to improve strength and balance, reducing the risk of falling.
  3. Setting Realistic Goals: Each participant is encouraged to set personal goals for their own well-being and independence.
  4. Fear Management: Dealing with the fear of falling is essential, and this program addresses those concerns, helping participants regain their confidence.
