2022 Summer Spark!
Helpful Information: Workshops held at the Agricultural Resources Center, 1175 South Brady Ave, Newton, unless otherwise noted. Payment is needed to confirm your registration. Refunds are not made unless the workshop is  cancelled due to weather or low registration.  4-H’ers may use scholarship money to pay for classes of their choice. Summer scholarships are available, email donna_mull@ncsu.edu to for an application.  Payment must be made to confirm your spot in the classes.  

Class Descriptions:
Make and Take 4-H Summer SPIN Club- June 10, July 8, August 12,and September 9 at Southwest Library.2pm to 3:15pm each day. Ages 8 to 12. Cost: $25 for the series.   Summer SPIN Craft Club at the Southwest Library. Each meeting we will create something different that you can take home and enjoy for the rest of Summer! Some crafts include building a birdhouse, decorating pots to plant succulents in ,and more! Instructors: Rebekah Kale and Jessica Cox, 4-H Leaders

Beginner Crochet- *CLOSED*  June 13 -15, 9am to 12pm.Ages 8 and up. Cost:$25. Class Limit of 10.
Learn the basics of crochet by making different projects such as a washcloth, face scrubbies and granny squares. Instructor: Adreanna White,4-H Program Assistant

Wonderful World of Bees- *CLOSED*   June 20th,22nd,and 24th,9:30am to 12pm each day. Ages 9 and up  Class limit of 12.Cost: $1 Explore the world of bees through hands-on activities such as building and decorating a beehive and going on a field trip to see bees! Instructors: Catawba County Beekeepers Association

College Caravan-  *FULL*June 20-23, 9am to 3pm (appox.) each day at St.Stephens Library.  Class limit of 12. 9th-11th graders. Cost: $50  Finding the right college can be a challenge, but also exciting. Join Juntas 4-H for our summer College Caravan. We will learn more about the college selection process and tour a few schools while we are at it.

Discovery Days- *CLOSED* June 27-30 ,8:30am-4pm. Ages 9-14. Cost: $100 for the whole week or $30 for individual days. Limit of 10. SOME ACTIVTIY DAYS HAVE CHANGED SINCE THE ORIGINAL SCHEDULE WAS POSTED! Come join in the fun of 4 days of discovery. Each day youth will enjoy an education and recreational activity. Transportation will be provided from the Ag Resource Center to each activity.

Farm to Fork- *CLOSED* July 5-7, 9am to 4pm. Ages 9 and up .Cost: $50.Class limit of 12.
Begin the day with a visit to a nearby farm and/or farmers market and learn how things grow. Then we return to the Extension office for kitchen time when you learn to turn the farm produce into yummy new recipes. Instructors: April Vigardt, Local Foods Agent and Tina McGillvary, FCS Agent.

Dot and Dash Robotics *CLOSED*- July 26 and 27, 9am to 12pm OR 1pm to 4pm.Ages: 8 to 12.Limit 14 youth per session. Cost:$10  Learn the basics of robotics and coding through building and programming Dot and Dash. Dot and Dash are robots that can respond to voices, have different sensors, and can move around and navigate objects as well as a ton of other features!  Instructor: Emily Kanupp, 4-H Leader

EV3 Robotics- *CLOSED* August 15-18, 9am to 4pm each day. Ages 10 and up. Class limit of 18. Cost: $50.   Learn how to design, build, and program a sumobot that will face off against the other teams' robots. Two sumobots battle to try and push each other out of the ring. We will have a final competition to determine the champion sumobot. Instructor: Emily Kanupp. 4-H Leader

Health Rocks!- August 25 and 26, 9am to 3pm each day. Ages 11to 14. Class limit of 12. Cost: $25  Learn about healthy living through hands-on activities with some community service mixed in as well as a trip to the ropes course at Camp Dogwood. Instructors: Donna Mull,4-H agent and Adreanna White,4-H Program Assistant.

4-H Project Book Workshop- *CLOSED* June 8, 1:30pm to 3:30pm OR 6:30pm to 8:30pm. No cost. Parents MUST attend with youth. 4-H Project Books are a core element of 4-H. Learn about what they are, how to set them up and what they can do for you in the future. Instructor: Donna Mull, 4-H Agent.

Science of Survival- *CLOSED* June 10 at Riverbend Park OR June 17 at Bakers Mountain Park. 9:30am to 2pm.Ages 9 and up. Cost: $15. Choose your location and date. Children should be dropped off and picked up at the park. Join us for this day of park adventure. We will practice fire starting, map and compass orienteering, backcountry travel, emergency shelter setup, and more. We will be outside for the entire day. Instructors:
Dr. George Place, Cooperative Extension Director and Dr. Adam Smith, Horticulture Agent

Hiking and Wildlife Class-  *CLOSED* June 21 at Bakers Mountain Park, 8:30am to 12pm. Ages 8 and up. Class limit of 15.Cost:$10.Drop off and pick up at the park.  We will plan on hiking 2 to 3 miles at Bakers Mountain Park with wildlife activities and science journaling along the way. Instructors: Emily Kanupp, 4-H Leader and WHEP Team

Hiking and Watercolor Class-  *CLOSED* June 23 at Riverbend Park,8:30am to 12pm.Ages 8 and up. Class limit of 15. Cost: $15. Drop off and pick up at the park. We will plan on hiking 2 to 3 miles. Along the way we will stop and learn how to draw what we observe and paint with watercolors. Instructor: Emily Kanupp, 4-H Leader

Explore the World with Virtual Reality-  *CLOSED* June 23, 1pm to 3pm.Ages 11and up. Class limit of 10. Cost: $5 Watch 360° tours in virtual reality to 'visit" wonders of the world. We will also "visit" Washington DC which you can add to your project book under citizenship. Instructor: Josiah Florez,4-H Teen Volunteer

CPR and First Aid- *FULL* July 15, 1Oam to 12pm.Ages 10 and up. Class limit of 20. No cost.
Learn the basics of CPR and First Aid through hands-on experiences from a Catawba County Paramedic. Instructor :Melanie Sigmon, Catawba County EMS

Pantomime Class- July 21,1pm to 4pm.Ages 1O and up. Class limit of 15 .Cost: $5.
Learn how to tell a story using only your body and facial movements as we become animals, machines and characters in stories. Instructor: Cyndi Whittaker, Assistant Director of CAST

WeDo 2.0 Robotics- *FULL* July 25,9am to 12pm. Ages 7 to 10. Class limit of 12. No cost.
Learn how to build and program different robots through the WeDo 2.0 Lego Robotics kits such as a Pull-Robot that can move objects around or a race car. Instructor: Adreanna White, 4-H Program Assistant

3D Design for Beginners- *FULL* July 28, 1pm to 3:30pm at the Newton Library. Ages 9 and up. Cost:$8. Class limit of 10. Drop off and pick up at Newton Library.  Learn how to use Tinkercad to design 3D objects and see how a 3D printer works. Class attendance includes a coupon for 1 future 3D print at Newton Library!

Horsin' Around - *BOTH CLASSES FULL* August 3  OR 5, 9am to 12pm at Sunset Ridge Barn, Mt.View. Choose the date to attend. Ages 6-12. Cost: $10.  Enjoy a morning of lots of different horse and animal science activities, as you learn about opportunities available through the 4-H Horse Club and NC 4-H horse program. Meet the barn horses and their teen owners, who will guide the learning activities for the day. Instructors: Catawba Equestrians 4-H Club.

Creative Movement- August 4, 1pm to 4pm.Ages 6 to 10.Class limit of 15 .Cost: $5.
Youth will engage their voices, body and emotions as they interact with familiar stories, play games and dance to instrumental music. Instructor: Cyndi Whittaker, Assistant Director of CAST

Just Grow It- Two Mondays each month,5:30pm to 6:30pm. at the Civitan Park in Hickory

Livestock Skillathon Clinic- June 4 ,9am to 2 pm. Caldwell Agriculture Fairgrounds. Ages 8 to 18. Cost: $10. Learn about feeds, equipment, livestock breeds, meat science and more through hands-on activities. Species covered include beef cattle, sheep, meat goats and swine. NC 4-H Citizenship Focus, June 14-16,in Raleigh. Ages 13-18. Limited to current 4-H members only. This three day program seeks to provide youth from across the state an opportunity to come together to learn about civic engagement, youth advocacy, and how to make a difference in their communities.

NC 4-H Congress, July 16-19, in Raleigh. Ages 13-18. Limited to current 4-H members only.  4-H Congress is a great opportunity to sharpen your leadership skills through serving on committees, listening to keynote speakers, and more.
